The 21 Lacrosse Mission
Our
goal at 21 Lacrosse is to provide an environment that is both challenging
and rewarding. Unlike many others in our field we will be focused on teaching
the game. Yes we will have leagues, we will have All-Star teams, and all the
bells and whistles.
What will make us different? We will offer additional sessions
on a weekly basis that will help you hone your game. We will show
you the proper way to play defense … proper stick handling
skills … basic checks such as pokes, raps and slaps …
we won’t be teaching our younger players “kayaks”,
“ginsus” or “ding-dongs” … That
comes later.
You’ll learn about team defense and team offense. You will
learn a variety of defenses, and different slide packages. We
will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each as we see
them. We will explain how a defense is developed to take away
what the other team wants to do offensively, and conversely, what
an offense can do to attack any specific defense.
The game of lacrosse can be as violent as a street fight and as
graceful as a bird in flight. We want our players to progress
to the point where the hitting is secondary. If the game of lacrosse
is played properly, the ball is constantly in the air and teams
are not annihilating their opponents, but rather scheming ways
to outfox the other team.
Lacrosse is a thinking man’s game. Our goal is to instill
in our players those proper thoughts so that when you do hit the
field of play, your lacrosse IQ is greater than your opponents.
Lacrosse is the greatest game ever. Respect the game and respect
your opponent. Work hard and do your best. When the dust settles
and you are on the short end of the score, don’t despair.
If you have given 100%, that is all anyone can ask. Shake your
opponents hand and congratulate them on a job well done …
and remember … you’ll be seeing them again.
“Love life … live for lacrosse!”
The Players
RICK
BAGBY- Rick grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia. A devout
baseball player throughout his youth, upon discovering lacrosse
his life and direction were forever changed. A member of the Lane
High School star-studded lacrosse team of the mid 70's, Rick has
been surrounded by great players and coaches throughout his career.
From Dick Proutt at Lane, a "cup of
coffee" with Jack Emmer at Washington & Lee, and ultimately
with the great Howdy Myers at Hampden-Sydney College, the impressions
left by these coaches have been many. "I have been fortunate
to have played for the greatest coaches. Each had an impact on
my life, but none could compare to the mark left by Howdy."
(Howdy Myers was selected by Lacrosse Magazine as "The Coach
of the Century"). Rick was a 3-year starter and standout
goalie at H-SC from 1977-1979.
Since leaving college Rick has been on a
mission of sorts as he spreads his love for the game across the
country. He coached club teams at the University of Georgia, Northeastern
University, and Emerson College. He started new intercollegiate
teams while director of athletics at Emerson College in Boston,
MA (NCAA Division III) and Bellarmine University in Louisville,
KY (NCAA Division I).
Rick has coached Boston College High School
and is currently the coach at Scituate High School. He has also
been involved at the grassroots level, as he has had a hand in
helping to launch youth programs in Duxbury, Marshfield, and Boston,
Massachusetts. "21 Lacrosse, for me serves two purposes;
1) it gives me a means to give to others the tremendous love of
the game that was so graciously given to me, and, 2) most importantly,
it provides a vehicle through which I can help preserve the memory
of a great young man, PJ "Trendo" Trendowicz, who not
only represented everything that is great about lacrosse, but
more importantly, what is great about people in general."
CHARLIE LONERGAN –
Charlie has been involved with lacrosse since his youth in Concord,
Massachusetts. Never a baseball player, he was fortunate to have
grown up in a lacrosse hotbed in Concord. A member of the powerful
Concord-Carlisle High School lacrosse program, Charlie was an
“All-Scholastic” performer as well as Concord-Carlisle’s
“Most Valuable Player”.
Charlie took his game to Hobart College where
he converted to midfield. An NCAA Division I postseason participant
(versus Duke in 2000), Charlie has played the game at the highest
level. He was a three-year player at the powerful upstate New
York institution, from which he graduated in May of 2000.
Since college Charlie has served as a sports
reporter for many local newspapers and is a writer for Inside
Lacrosse. Charlie has worked as associate head coach and “offensive
coordinator” for Rick at Boston College High School and
Scituate High School, and will be serving as General Manager for
21 Lacrosse. Named “CL Smooth” by none other
than “Trendo”, Charlie looks forward to building 21
Lacrosse into a local, regional and eventually national name.
“Rick and I are a great team. We complement each other very
well. Besides, given the reason why we are doing this (“Trendo”),
I can assure you that we will be a success … I guarantee
it.” Amen.
